De-registrations and scrapping
In South Africa, your vehicle must be registered at your relevant district Licensing department. If the vehicle is no longer in any working condition an application for de-registration must be done. Maybe you just want to use the vehicle as a piece of art, in this case, you would also need to de-register such a vehicle.
DOCUMENTS YOU NEED TO SUBMIT:
For All most De-registration Reasons:
- Police Affidavit stating why the vehicle must be deregistered / scrapped
The affidavit must describe vehicle registration number, license number, and chassis number) - The Vehicle Original Natis (RC1) / Vehicle Registration document
- ID copy of the owner
- Photos of scrap vehicle
- Proof of Address not older than 3 months (Utility Bill or First Page of Bank Statement)
- If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit
- If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councilor confirming your address.
- Complete and bring along ADV
A vehicle can not be deregistered / scrapped if a new owner failed to do a change of ownership. If a new owner failed to do the change of ownership, and is nowhere to be found / can not be traced, an "export buyer unknown" has to be done. For this, please bring the following:
- Police Affidavit stating the vehicle has been sold, with sale date, sale amount. The reason why an “export buyer unknown” needs to be done: New owner has disappeared or the owner can not be located for change of ownership. The affidavit must describe vehicle registration number, license number, and chassis number)
- NCO (notification of change of ownership) needs to be completed
- The Vehicle Original Natis (RC1)
- Identity document copy of the current owner (Person sold to)
- Complete and bring along NCO

When do I need to De-register or scrap my vehicle?
If you are in one of the following situations, you can
de-register/scrap your vehicle. Only the Titleholder of the vehicle has
the authority to de-register/scrap the vehicle:
- The vehicle is stolen;
- The vehicle is no longer in a working condition (Road accidents, vintage vehicles, permanently demolished, etc)
- The repairs of the vehicle are beyond fixing (Declared permanently unfit)
- The vehicle becomes exempt from registration
There might be a larger variety of reasons for a vehicle
